"How to Succeed In Business" Closing

After fifteen months of performances, How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying was handed it's final notice. The show opened in February 2011 with Daniel Radcliffe as the lead. Radcliffe's role packed the theater, and quickly recuperated the $9 million that was initially invested in the musical. Nick Jonas took over Radcliffe's role after Darren Criss, and the cast was unable to continue to bring in expected profits. CBS reports:

When it closes, the revival will have played just over 500 performances since it opened at the Al Hirschfeld Theatre in February 2011. It quickly recouped its $9 million initial investment that December, thanks to its then-star Daniel Radcliffe.

Jonas, best known as part of the Jonas Brothers boy band, took over the lead this January and had committed to staying until at least July 1, but ticket sales took a noticeable hit. Last week, the box office took in just $368,000 out of a potential gross of $1,394,000.

If the show had opened in December 2010, it would have run for seventeen months by now, which perhaps you meant to write, but it opened on March 27th, 2011, so even the article you quote from CBS gets it wrong. It is a common mistake. It started previews in February 2011, that is different from opening.

All that said, I am thrilled to know that Daniel Radcliffe carried the show farther than Nick Jonas was able to.

Well there is no suprise that Nick Jonas, who has one of the worst voices I have ever heard, caused the show to close. He can’t hold a candle to Dan! I wish so much I could have seen him myself, he was just amazing the way his feet movied when he danced. =D

I would have loved to see this (With Dan of course!) I wonder how well he sings…

@horcruxhunter7: check out YouTube — Dan sings very well, especially considering he did the whole show w/an American accent!!

And yes, the “seven months” mentioned in the first line of the article is wrong, no matter how you look at it. Dan did the show for 9-10 months (including previews), then Darren for 3 weeks, then Nick for ~4 months, by the end of the run.

It’s really sad that the show is closing, because it’s really a fantastic show.
But I can’t help but feel so so so proud of Dan and Darren at this moment, they both carried the show so incredibly well, more than some people expected them to (~both of them), and it’s just good to know that our beloved boys did so amazingly well when they had their run in the show. It’s really the best comfort in the world.

No, it has not been updated with the correct length, it has been updated with the length that would be correct if it were also correct that it opened in December 2010, but that is not correct, and oddly is different from the incorrect information quoted from the article where you apparently got your information about the closing. Here is the correct information:

Previews began February 26th, 2011
Opening Night was March 27th, 2011
Closing Night will be May 20th, 2012

Total Previews: 30
Total Regular Performances: 473

From first performance to last will be just under fifteen months, from opening to last performance just under fourteen.

Not the most important issue in the world, but when you’re someone who is responsible for getting information out, you should strive to get the right information out. is a better source for Broadway news than CBS.

At least the investors made their money back, which happens far less than you might think, even for shows that have run for awhile, such as Spiderman.
PS I wonder how Dan would look in a Spidey suit. And if he could get Emma to play MJ, and Rupert to play the Green Goblin, then we have something to see, right? That would really put bums in the seats.

Jeeze people no need to bombard the editor with so many different piece of information! Everyone is saying different dates and let’s be honest – the main point is that it’s closing and Dan did best – which the article clearly states.
